The Elantra GT, until recently, was the only car badged "Grand Touring" in the Hyundai line-up. Since then, the 2003 Tiburon has added GT models to its lineup, following in its stablemate's sporting character.
Is it a "Grand Tourer"? It depends on what your concept of 'touring' is and how 'grand' you want to be.
If touring means spending hours behind the wheel of a competent, comfortable, versatile and economical car, then the Elantra GT is an excellent example.
In addition to a 1989 Sonata GL, I have owned 1993 and 1996 Elantra GLs before owning my 2002 GT, and can say that this is the best Elantra yet!
Its level of fit, finish and refinement surpasses all of my previous cars and is the equal or better than any car in its class on the market. Feature lines and body panels line up perfectly, and gaps are narrow and even -- something that many other more expensive cars cannot claim.
The back of the car may take some getting used to as is the case with all hatchbacks, and the optional spoiler does add a different flair to this end of the car. The clear red stop lenses and European-style amber turn signals are bright and easily visible at a distance. The auxiliary red lights at the sides of the licence plate also add an extra measure of pizazz to the car's rear end. Side marker lamps -- red and amber in the rear and front quarter panels, respectively -- also add to the car's European-influenced styling.
The front is business-like and the car's 'face' seems to suggest a bit of 'attitude' as it scowls at the world. Oh, and those lights -- they work beautifully. Brilliant, white and powerful.
